Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma introduced a fleet of 55 electric buses on June 9 as part of the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme. The initiative aims to modernize public transportation in the state while promoting sustainable urban mobility and reducing carbon emissions.
The new fleet consists of two sizes to accommodate different travel needs. It includes 25 buses that measure nine metres with 27 seats each, alongside 30 seven-metre buses that seat 22 passengers. Each vehicle offers a driving range exceeding 150 kilometres and includes wheelchair access to support passengers with disabilities.
To support the new infrastructure, the government is building a dedicated e-bus depot at Umsawli in New Shillong. This facility will handle the ongoing maintenance and operations for the electric fleet.
Highlighting the impact of the project, Sangma stated, "Together, we move towards cleaner, smarter and more efficient mobility." This rollout reflects the state's broader commitment to inclusive transit and modernizing its public transport network for all residents.
