Meghalaya Launches Fisheries Clusters to Boost Local Production

Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is pushing to set up fisheries clusters across Meghalaya. The state project targets more than 1,000 local fish farmers. It aims to grow output and fix gaps in the supply chain.

Sangma shared the news on X this week. He confirmed the plan uses the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund to bankroll the setup. These new units will handle everything from production to marketing.

The state is not working alone. Officials are teaming up with the National Fisheries Development Board, NABARD, and Uday Aqua. These partners bring technical expertise to the table. They will offer market linkages and training to help farmers improve their day-to-day operations. "The initiative will create dedicated units under the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) to boost fish production, marketing and value-chain development," the Chief Minister stated.

This effort marks a clear shift toward better practices. It forces a change in how local farmers raise and sell their stock. The goal remains simple. Grow more fish and get them to market faster.
