Shillong: The Meghalaya government has committed to a thorough review of the proposed limestone mining project in Daistong village, Jaintia Hills, following significant pushback from local residents and various activist organizations. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar announced the government's stance after meeting with a delegation representing the Jaintia National Council, the Jaintia Students' Union, and concerned local villagers.

During the meeting, the delegation submitted a formal petition alleging substantial irregularities within the public hearing process and the environmental clearance procedures required for the mining venture. This intervention occurred shortly after youth organizations staged a protest march in Shillong, which saw demonstrators attempt to reach the state secretariat before being intercepted by police forces amid tightened security measures.

Addressing the media, Dhar emphasized that the government must carefully evaluate the grievances before deciding the project's future. He noted that the core of the opposition centers on environmental concerns, which fall under the purview of the Forest Department, overseen by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. The Deputy Chief Minister stated he would consult with the Chief Minister to ensure that all legal and environmental protocols were strictly adhered to during the proposal stage.
