Shillong: Meghalaya pulled the plug on a 200 crore interest-free loan for the PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital. Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla confirmed the state rejected the proposal from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya. The decision stems from the state's tight budget.
Shylla addressed the media on June 30. He explained the state carries a heavy revenue deficit. Officials chose to prioritize other areas instead. The minister noted the decision happened under the previous cabinet before his tenure. "At the initial stage there was a discussion, but later the government declined it. There is no such support," he said.
The government views the medical college as a private venture. Officials believe the university should find its own funding. The state cannot afford to bankroll private projects while managing its own financial shortfall. No further support is planned.
