Shillong: Tensions reached a breaking point in the Meghalaya Cricket Association this week. President James P.K. Sangma suspended Honorary Secretary Rayonald Kharkamni, sparking a fierce backlash from other top officials. Vice-President Rajiv Bareh and Joint Secretary Mebanphira Swer labeled the move unconstitutional. They claim Sangma bypassed standard disciplinary procedures and acted without the required approval from the Apex Council.
Kharkamni hit back, alleging Sangma manipulated recommendations from the Meghalaya State Commission for Women to settle a personal score. He claims he maintains majority support among council members. "The MCA president has no authority to remove an elected office bearer," Kharkamni stated. He also raised concerns over a hacked email account and pointed to ignored testimony during the commission's proceedings.
The feud leaves the future of cricket in the state hanging in the balance. Persistent infighting threatens to drive away sponsors and sap morale among players and staff. With the association already battling financial and infrastructure hurdles, some observers fear the BCCI might eventually intervene. A high-stakes Special General Meeting is set for July 3 in Shillong. This showdown will likely decide who keeps control of the organization.
