Meghalaya Commission Clears Current Cricket Officials in Harassment Case

Shillong: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women will not sanction current MCA leadership for sexual harassment. Legal counsel Joy Grace Syiem stated the commission must only target individuals named in the initial May 4 complaint. Six Under-23 team members identified the head coach, manager, and four former office-bearers as respondents.

Investigators summoned current MCA president James P.K. Sangma to testify. Sangma joined the board in January 2026. He told officials the previous regime hid the December 2025 complaints from him. Syiem noted that mere testimony does not make someone a respondent. "The commission was legally bound to proceed only against the individuals named in the original complaint," Syiem said.

The inquiry exposed a massive failure among previous MCA brass. They sat on reports for five months instead of taking action. The commission ordered the suspension of coach Hemant Roy and the firing of manager Sanjay Mandal. Investigators also cited the MCA for failing to create a mandatory internal complaints panel. The association has 30 days to comply with all directives or face further consequences.
