Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma officially inaugurated the relocated 41 Meghalaya Battalion NCC complex at Cherangre, Tura, on Tuesday. The event, described by the Chief Minister as a momentous occasion for the state, featured a formal Guard of Honour, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, and various cultural performances alongside tree-planting activities.
During his address, Sangma highlighted the vital role of the NCC in fostering discipline, patriotism, and leadership among the youth. Drawing from his own childhood aspirations of joining the armed forces, the Chief Minister noted that the values upheld by uniformed personnel are essential for molding responsible citizens. He stressed that the government views investments in the younger generation as long-term assets rather than mere expenditures, emphasizing that true success is measured by the number of lives transformed through such initiatives.
The relocation of the battalion from Shillong to Tura is designed to expand the organization's reach across the Garo Hills. Originally established as the 15 Assam Artillery Battery NCC in 1961 and upgraded in 2020, the unit now oversees training across five districts. It currently supports 1,120 cadets and 24 troops, with enrollment figures projected to reach nearly 2,400 cadets by May 2026.
Sangma connected this development to the state's broader Youth and Sports Policy, which integrates education, entrepreneurship, and skill development into a unified roadmap for empowerment. He also pointed to Meghalaya's rising national profile, citing major infrastructure projects like the construction of the country's largest football stadium. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the NCC song and the National Anthem, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening the presence of the NCC in the region.
