Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma promised a heavy hand against industrial polluters in Meghalaya on Tuesday. The state has already shuttered six factories in the last few months for dumping toxins. More could follow. The government is not playing around.
Sangma addressed the ethanol plant in Byrnihat specifically, brushing off calls to single it out without proof. He pointed out that the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board keeps a close eye on all industrial sites through regular audits. He claims ethanol plants usually run cleaner by using rice as a base material.
Officials now demand major plants install live, sensor-based systems to track emissions in real time. The goal is to clean up the border belt between Meghalaya and Assam. Sangma remains firm on enforcement. "If anybody is found flouting the rules, breaking environmental laws or operating without the required pollution-control equipment, strict action will be taken," he stated.
The government plans to send extra teams to audit the area if new, credible reports of damage surface. Authorities are watching the border closely. No one gets a free pass.
