Shillong: Shillong is buzzing with talk of a major political shift. Eight United Democratic Party legislators might jump ship to the BJP. The state Assembly has 60 members. If eight UDP members defect, the UDP would drop from 12 seats to four. The BJP would jump from two seats to 10.
This move hits the two-thirds threshold required by anti-defection laws. It changes the math for the NPP-led MDA-II government. Cabinet seats are not guaranteed. They are appointed by the Governor on the Chief Minister's advice. If the BJP grows to 10 seats, they will likely demand a bigger share of the power. This puts UDP minister Lahkmen Rymbui in a tight spot.
Government officials remain dismissive. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stated, "As of now, nothing is there." He confirmed no cabinet reshuffle is planned. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar echoed this sentiment. He insists the government is secure and will finish its term. The UDP has also publicly denied that its members are leaving.
The government claims the coalition is stable. Yet, the numbers game continues to loom over Shillong. A 10-member BJP is a different beast than a two-member party. If the shift happens, the current cabinet arrangement will face a hard test. For now, the administration waits. No official change has been made.
