Shillong: Friction over development works in the UDP-held Sohiong constituency has triggered a potential political exodus. Nine United Democratic Party legislators are reportedly eyeing a jump to the BJP. The move stems from deep resentment over their lack of influence within the NPP-led MDA-II government. They feel sidelined by the ruling party’s dominance in the 60-member assembly.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma sparked the tensions in July. He laid foundation stones for projects including the Kynroh and Sohiong Viewpoints, the Nongkasen Tree House, a hotel at Lum Diengiei, various roads, and water schemes. UDP circles claim the contracts were handled by individuals close to the NPP, effectively shutting out the local UDP MLA, Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah.
The disgruntled group now seeks firmer ground. They have presented a list of state-specific demands to BJP central leadership. These include granting minority status to Seng Khasi and Seng Raij, including Khasi in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, and amending coal-mining and residency rules. They also want support for churches via the PRASAD scheme and the relocation of the Dalit Sikh community from Them Iewmawlong.
Congress leader Vincent H. Pala claims these maneuvers are typical of the saffron party. Pala said, "The only way the BJP can expand is by luring MLAs from regional parties." Senior UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh confirmed the internal unrest. He cited a lack of direction within the party and noted that his own development proposals have been ignored for two and a half years.
Metbah Lyngdoh, the UDP president, denies mass defections. He maintains that all 12 party MLAs are staying put. Meanwhile, sources suggest the Chief Minister may consider a cabinet reshuffle to settle the unrest. With the NPP holding 33 seats and the UDP holding 12, the stakes are high. The political future of the coalition remains in flux as leadership waits for word from Delhi.
