Shillong: Canoeist Pynshngain Kurbah made history on June 16 by becoming the first beneficiary of Meghalaya’s Outstanding Sportsperson Direct Appointment Policy. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma presented the appointment letter to Kurbah during the Meghalaya Sports Conclave 2026 held in Shillong.

Kurbah secured this opportunity following his bronze medal win in canoeing at the 38th National Games. The state cabinet approved this hiring policy in February to provide career security to athletes who represent the state at elite levels.

During the event, Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the importance of the initiative for the region's sporting future. He said the policy is "aimed at providing talented sportspersons with greater career security and motivation to excel at national and international levels."

The ceremony took place in the presence of Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla and several other officials. This program serves as a cornerstone of the government's strategy to nurture local talent and ensure that high-level athletic success leads to tangible long-term career benefits within state services.
