Shillong: Meghalaya is embarking on a major infrastructure transformation to position the northeast as a hub for tourism and sports. During the North East India Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition 2026 held in Shillong, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced plans for a 40,000-seat football stadium and a significant expansion of luxury hospitality across the state.
The state is investing Rs 800 crore into the new football facility, which will be FIFA-certified and capable of hosting international matches. This project is a key component of the state's preparations for the upcoming National Games. Sangma noted that while the region previously lacked premium accommodations, two five-star hotels are now operational. An additional eight are planned for the next few years, with construction already active for four of them.
Highlighting the state's economic progress, Sangma stated that the budget has doubled over the past eight years and is expected to triple by 2029. Capital expenditure has also grown sixfold to support projects like the new assembly building and the revival of Shillong airport, which expects to launch large commercial operations within 18 months.
Reflecting on the regional development goals, Sangma told attendees that the northeast is "daring to dream" while shaping its future growth story. The summit was attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who gathered to discuss ways to sustain long-term regional prosperity.
