Imphal: Olympic boxing champion M.C. Mary Kom faces a criminal defamation suit from her former husband, Karung Onkholer Kom. The case moves to a hearing on November 19, 2026. The legal action falls under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaced the Indian Penal Code. Conviction carries up to two years behind bars or a heavy fine.
Trouble started after Mary Kom used television spots and interviews to claim Onler defrauded her of crores. She alleged he took loans in her name, mortgaged her properties, and moved assets without consent. Onler calls these claims baseless. He told reporters, "the matter was now sub judice."
The pair split in 2023 following a 20-year relationship that began in Delhi in 2000. They share four children. Once, she called him her pillar of strength. Now, they face off in court. Onler claims the public accusations left him haunted and hounded. He wants damages and a formal apology.
Sources close to the ex-husband say the decision to sue followed months of intense pressure. Mary Kom recently appeared on the reality show Bigg Boss, keeping the drama in the spotlight. Her legal team plans to respond once the court summons arrives. The court must now weigh if her comments caused real harm to his reputation.
