Manipur Youth League Demands Transparency in Women's Empowerment Scheme

Imphal: The Manipur Youth League (MAYOL) is calling on the state government to provide full transparency regarding the newly announced Scheme for Economic Empowerment of Women through SHGs. There is growing concern that this initiative could be used as a political tool ahead of the upcoming Manipur Legislative Assembly elections.

Public speculation suggests the program may be linked to electoral interests, with allegations that elected representatives are using party workers to identify beneficiaries. MAYOL stressed that if the scheme truly aims to support women, officials must clearly outline its objectives, implementation methods, and the specific criteria used to choose recipients.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh introduced the initiative during the 2026-27 State Budget presentation. The plan involves a direct benefit transfer of Rs 10,000 to approximately 3.5 lakh women. Because the Rs 350 crore budget for this program originates from public funds, the organization argued that accountability is vital.

MAYOL has requested details on which agencies are responsible for selecting participants and whether women outside of existing Self Help Groups qualify for assistance. Following reports that the funds might be distributed before the Ningol Chakouba festival, the group is urging officials to confirm if the rollout will be staggered or completed at once. In a formal statement, the organization said, "If the scheme is genuinely intended to promote the economic empowerment and welfare of women, the government should clearly explain its objectives, implementation process and beneficiary selection criteria to the public."
