Imphal: The Commission of Inquiry investigating the 2023 ethnic violence in Manipur is conducting a three-day visit to the state from May 29 to May 31. Led by Chairman Justice B.S. Chauhan, the delegation includes retired IAS officer Himanshu Sekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar. The team met with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday to discuss the goals and itinerary of their trip.
The members toured several relief camps housing internally displaced persons across Bishnupur, Churachandpur, Imphal West, and Imphal East. By visiting these sites, the commission aims to evaluate the living conditions of families affected by the unrest and collect testimony regarding the impact of the conflict. The federal government established the panel in June 2023 under the Commissions of Inquiry Act to investigate the causes and sequence of events surrounding the violence that began on May 3, 2023.
The inquiry originated after a tribal solidarity march, held in opposition to the Meitei community's request for Scheduled Tribe status, triggered widespread unrest. More than 260 people lost their lives during the conflict. The commission is tasked with identifying administrative lapses, examining the facts behind the violence, and recommending strategies to restore lasting peace in the region.
