Manipur truck drivers halt services following deadly highway ambush

Imphal: Truck drivers in Manipur halted operations on Saturday along National Highway 37 to protest the killing of a driver in an armed ambush. The fatal attack occurred on May 29 at TM Kasom on the Imphal-Ukhrul Road, prompting hundreds of workers to abandon their vehicles in solidarity.

Approximately 400 trucks, including essential fuel tankers and goods carriers, remain stranded at Keithelmanbi. The drivers are calling for stronger security measures to protect commercial vehicles moving through conflict-prone areas of the state. In addition to improved safety, they are demanding the full reopening of National Highway 102, which serves as a vital link to neighboring regions.

Representatives for the drivers stated that the strike will continue until officials provide adequate protection and restore normal transit on the highway. Authorities have not yet addressed these demands, though security agencies are monitoring the situation. If the suspension continues, it risks disrupting the supply of essential commodities and fuel throughout the state.
