Manipur Social Welfare Department Outlines Major Aid Programs

Imphal: Manipur officials held a press briefing at the DIPR Auditorium in Imphal to outline state welfare efforts. The Social Welfare Department currently manages 22 sub-schemes backed by Central Ministry funds.

Director Sheikh Abdul Hakim said, “The Social Welfare Department is one of the State’s major implementing agencies for Centrally Sponsored Schemes, with around 22 sub-schemes being implemented through financial assistance from various Central Ministries.” The department operates 2,400 Anganwadi Centres for child health and nutrition. It also runs Mission Vatsalya to support child protection facilities like juvenile boards and homes.

Support for vulnerable groups remains a priority. The state oversees 41 old age homes and 25 de-addiction centers. For women in distress, 47 Shakti Sadan facilities offer shelter and counseling. Officials also pointed to the 181 Women Helpline for emergency assistance and 51 Sakhi Niwas hostels for working women.

A major payout arrives soon. On the 20th, the Chief Minister will distribute 104 crore rupees in benefits. This follows a 15-day campaign to register beneficiaries with required documentation. Over 100,000 people qualify for the Old Age Pension Scheme alone. Thousands more will receive widow pensions.

Disability services continue to grow. The department offers scholarships and maintenance grants. Officials urged citizens to get a Unique Disability ID card. Medical camps are currently running across all assembly constituencies to fast-track these certifications.
