Guwahati: Congress leader Ripun Bora blasted the government over India’s 7.8 percent GDP growth for the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year. He argues the figure masks the harsh reality for everyday people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi touted the result on Tuesday as a mark of economic confidence. Bora rejects the official narrative. He claims the administration is simply boasting about manipulated statistics.
"The government announced, and the Prime Minister is very proud and boasting about this projected GDP growth of 7.8% in the first quarter of this financial year. We have seen this on earlier occasions as well. This GDP is managed; it is not actual," Bora said. He insists the data serves only wealthy businessmen and big capitalists rather than the common citizen.
The 7.8 percent expansion beat the Reserve Bank of India’s 7 percent projection. It also topped analyst expectations. The April-June performance outpaced the 6.9 percent growth recorded during the same period last year. Official data credits this rise to stronger domestic consumption, government capital expenditure, investments, and exports. Manufacturing and services sectors provided the bulk of the lift.
Bora remains unconvinced. He highlights rising prices as a primary burden forcing households to cut back on essential goods. The opposition demands the government shift its focus beyond headline numbers. They want a real assessment of employment, poverty levels, and actual household income. If the growth were real, he asks, why does poverty still persist?
