Imphal: Manipur Police arrested two suspected NSCN (IM) cadres for shaking down commuters on National Highway 37. Officers nabbed the men at Sibilong in Tamenglong district on Wednesday. The suspects, 45-year-old Gaisuaklung Ngaomei of Bhalok village and 29-year-old Job Gangmei of Sibilong Part-II, face charges of highway extortion.
Police searched the pair and seized one live cartridge, Rs 22,000 in cash, and two Baofeng communication sets along with chargers. The bust follows an August 1 meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat led by Yumnam Khemchand Singh. The government and local transport groups signed an agreement there to bolster security for highway convoys. Officials plan to revise standard operating procedures, name nodal officers, and start district-level police drives within thirty days.
The NSCN (IM) remains under a ceasefire deal with the Centre that started in 1997. The rules explicitly ban the group from public displays of arms or wearing uniforms in public. In a separate case, the NSCN/GPRN (K) Zeliangrong Region denied ties to P Lungthaokhon. The group issued a statement after Kaimai Police arrested Lungthaokhon at 3:30 p.m. on August 1. They stated, "he is neither a member of nor associated with the organisation."
