Manipur MLA Dinganglung Gangmei Calls for Peace After Deadly Ambush

Imphal: Nungba constituency MLA Dinganglung Gangmei appealed for calm across Manipur on June 9, following the death of 58-year-old Chunjanglung Panmei. Panmei died after an alleged ambush by armed militants on June 8, prompting a solidarity gathering at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences mortuary in Imphal.

Community members and various organizations gathered at the site to pay tribute to the victim. Following the service, the family transported Panmei’s body to his native village of Pongringlong in the Kangpokpi district for final funeral rites.

Addressing the mourners, Gangmei emphasized that historical conflicts between communities have failed to produce positive results. He urged residents to avoid retaliatory acts and prioritize dialogue to resolve regional grievances. The MLA noted that while frustration often stems from misunderstandings, democratic institutions provide the necessary framework for addressing disputes without resorting to bloodshed.

During his address, the legislator stressed the importance of relying on the justice system to hold perpetrators accountable. "The law will take its own course against those involved in unlawful activities," he stated, encouraging citizens to maintain faith in the legal process. Gangmei concluded by warning that continued cycles of violence will only hinder the state’s progress and cause further suffering for all communities.
