Imphal: Manipur authorities moved to end an ongoing economic blockade by calling the United Naga Council to the table. Home Commissioner N. Ashok Kumar issued a formal invite to UNC president Ng. Lorho. The meeting aimed to tackle the state's security woes and restore peace. Officials set the talks for August 3, 2026, at 3:00 PM. The gathering was slated for the Conference Hall at the Old Secretariat Building in Imphal.
The UNC declined. They want a new date and a new location. UNC General Secretary Vareiyo Shatsang replied to the government, pointing out a scheduling conflict. The requested date falls on the Observance of the Framework Agreement. The group also cited travel concerns. "In view of the above, Vareiyo Shatsang, General Secretary, UNC, requested that the venue of the meeting be fixed at Senapati District Headquarters, Tamamzam, on a date preferably after 3rd August 2026."
The standoff continues. The UNC launched the blockade to demand justice for six Naga civilians killed in recent violence. Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs remain central to the proposed negotiations. Both sides currently await a response regarding the shift to the Senapati District Headquarters.
