Imphal: The Manipur government announced a series of fiscal and administrative reforms on May 29, following a cabinet meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal. Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to navigate current global challenges, the state will implement austerity measures including a reduction in the size of VIP security convoys. The government will also freeze all state-funded foreign travel, cut non-essential spending, and introduce work-from-home arrangements where feasible.
Alongside these cost-cutting measures, the cabinet addressed recruitment and development priorities. Authorities approved a two-year age relaxation for all state government job postings that have not yet been notified. Additionally, the Family Welfare Department received approval to fill 173 Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife positions using central government funding. To improve career prospects for staff, the cabinet also cleared a plan to rationalise roles within the Manipur State Power Company Limited.
Major infrastructure projects also received a boost during the meeting. Officials approved new compensation rates for land acquisition to accelerate the expansion of the Imphal-Jiribam and Imphal-Dimapur National Highways. Furthermore, the government extended the New Development Bank-funded Manipur Water Supply Project and greenlit the Loktak Experience Project. This tourism initiative is designed to transform Loktak Lake into a premier destination for visitors.
