Imphal: Delhi Police detained Rahul Gandhi and top opposition leaders on July 21. They staged a dharna outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence. The group demanded the Prime Minister step down. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav joined the demonstration. It triggered an immediate response from the government.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan arrived at the scene. They tried to negotiate an end to the protest. The talks failed to produce results. Officers removed the crowd by force.
Keisham Meghachandra Singh, Manipur Congress Legislature Party leader, blasted the move. He took to X to defend the party’s stance. He labeled the opposition leader a vital representative for the country. "Rahul Gandhi is the voice of India's youth, students, farmers, workers, and the marginalised," Singh stated. He argued that suppressing dissent hurts the core of the nation.
The Congress party now accuses the Centre of killing democratic debate. They claim the state wants to silence all criticism. The government has not yet replied to these specific accusations from Manipur.
