Shillong: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh vowed to catch the remaining suspects in the Leilon Vaiphei kidnapping case. Law enforcement already cuffed two of the five individuals identified by the victims. Families pointed out the suspects during a recent meeting with the Chief Minister and a delegation of Meitei and Naga MLAs in Makhan village.
Violence in the area remains a heavy shadow. On May 13, unidentified gunmen ambushed and killed three pastors. Following that attack, suspected Kuki militants seized 18 people at Leilon Vaiphei. Twelve hostages gained their freedom, but six others were snatched. Singh stated, "It is the responsibility of the government and law enforcement agencies to ensure their arrest." He confirmed that investigators have received clear orders to track down the remaining fugitives.
The Chief Minister spoke about the investigation while visiting the SEEDS Complex in Imphal West. He was there to launch the Uningthou Uyok tree planting drive. The state hopes to improve its environment by planting the Uningthou, which is the official tree of Manipur.
Beyond the investigation, Singh inspected the grounds of Olympian Park. Maintenance and water supply issues currently plague the site. He directed his staff to fix these problems so the gates can open for the public again. People are still wary of safety, but the Chief Minister believes the situation is improving. He expects the park to welcome visitors soon.
