Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has promised firm action following a deadly militant attack on a security-escorted convoy in Ukhrul district. The ambush occurred on May 29 near TM Kasom as a group of Food Corporation of India trucks and LPG tankers traveled from Yaingangpokpi toward Ukhrul under the protection of Manipur Police, CRPF, BSF, and RAF personnel.
The attack resulted in the death of 57-year-old Nitish Kumar, a truck driver from West Bengal’s Hooghly district. A police officer attached to the Litan Police Station also sustained bullet injuries during the confrontation. Singh confirmed that authorities have registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the incident.
Speaking at an event for tribal scholarship beneficiaries, the Chief Minister emphasized that lasting progress in the state depends on stability. He urged citizens to pursue peace through dialogue to ensure the safety of students and the broader community.
In response to the violence, hundreds of truck drivers have halted operations along National Highway-37. Approximately 400 vehicles, including essential LPG and oil tankers, are currently stranded at Keithelmanbi. The drivers are demanding improved highway security and the reopening of National Highway-102, vowing to keep services suspended until the government provides adequate protection.
