Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable after an armed ambush on a security-escorted convoy in the Ukhrul district. The attack occurred on May 29 near TM Kasom, targeting a fleet of Food Corporation of India trucks and LPG tankers traveling from Yaingangpokpi.

Nitish Kumar, a 57-year-old truck driver from Hooghly, West Bengal, died in the shooting. A police officer stationed at the Litan Police Station also suffered bullet wounds during the exchange. Singh confirmed that officials have registered an FIR and launched a formal investigation into the incident.

Speaking at an event for tribal scholarship beneficiaries, Singh emphasized that peace is essential for the progress of the state. He noted that students remain the most vulnerable group impacted by the ongoing cycle of violence.

In response to the attack, roughly 400 drivers have halted operations along National Highway 37. The trucks remain parked at Keithelmanbi as workers demand better highway security and the reopening of National Highway 102. Transport services will stay suspended until the government provides adequate safety measures for those traveling on state routes.
