Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met senior Assam Rifles officials at the Secretariat in Mantripukhri on Thursday to assess state security and border construction. Major General Gaurav Sharma, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), and Brigadier Pranav Prasoon, DIG of 28 Sector, attended the briefing to coordinate on the frontier's status.

Khemchand noted the meeting on social media: "Major General Shri Gaurav Sharma, SC, SM, Inspector General, Assam Rifles (South), and Brigadier Shri Pranav Prasoon, DIG, 28 Sector Assam Rifles, called on me at my Secretariat, Mantripukhri, Imphal, today. We discussed matters pertaining to general security and the status of border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border."

Security remains tight. The border districts of Kamjong, Chandel, and Tengnoupal face persistent threats from Myanmar's internal conflict, ethnic unrest, and insurgent activity. Assam Rifles currently maintains constant surveillance while establishing new forward operating locations. Troops struggle to curb smuggling of illegal firearms and narcotics while managing refugee crossings.

Construction work moves forward slowly. Officials aim to finish fencing the 398-kilometre Manipur segment of the India-Myanmar border by 2028. Only 55 kilometres were finished as of September 2026. Delays persist due to harsh terrain and logistical issues.

The Ministry of Home Affairs plans to scrap the Free Movement Regime in favor of a biometric pass system. Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organisation is working on sensitive zones like Moreh. Teams are testing electronic sensors and virtual fencing technology to supplement physical barriers as they attempt to seal the remainder of the 1,643-kilometre international line.
