Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited a relief camp in Makhan village on May 28 to address the needs of internally displaced persons. Accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister L Dikho and several MLAs, Singh reviewed current rehabilitation efforts in areas including Kanto Sabal, Imphal, and Kanglatongbi that have faced ongoing unrest.
During his visit, the Chief Minister pledged that his government is dedicated to the safe return of families to their homes. He noted that security forces remain active in the region and continue to conduct search operations despite the difficult challenges of the hilly terrain.
Displaced residents used the visit to highlight severe hardships, including a lack of basic necessities and recent reports of violence. Simon Sawang, a resident from Konsakhul, shared that the Chief Minister personally guaranteed that those responsible for recent abductions would face the law. According to Sawang, the government has committed to providing immediate aid and essential supplies to those at the camp.
The region has seen several security incidents throughout May, including the abduction of 18 civilians from Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13. While those hostages were released on May 15 following intervention from the United Naga Council and other civil society groups, concerns over safety remain. State officials stated that they are working to balance the restoration of law and order with the urgent humanitarian requirements of the local population.
