Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has strongly condemned an ambush on a commercial convoy that left a truck driver dead and a police constable injured. The attack occurred Friday along National Highway 202 between Leingangching and TM Kasom in the Ukhrul district.

The convoy, which included 15 to 20 trucks transporting essential goods like Food Corporation of India rice, was under the protection of a joint security team consisting of the BSF, CRPF, and state police when suspected militants opened fire. Security forces returned fire, leading to a brief exchange before the attackers fled.

The deceased driver, reportedly a resident of West Bengal, died from bullet wounds sustained during the assault. The injured police constable, who suffered a gunshot wound to the knee, is currently recovering. Chief Minister Singh described the attack as a cowardly act designed to disrupt the distribution of essential supplies and create instability in the region.

The Chief Minister suggested the ambush was orchestrated by groups seeking to derail government efforts to restore peace and normalcy across Manipur. In response, security forces have initiated search and cordon operations in the surrounding areas to locate and apprehend those responsible. Authorities have pledged to prosecute the perpetrators to the full extent of the law as concerns mount regarding the safety of transport routes in the hill districts.
