Manipur BJP Leader Sharda Devi Sworn Into Rajya Sabha

Imphal: Manipur BJP president A. Sharda Devi took her oath as a Rajya Sabha member on June 29. She secured the state's only Upper House seat without facing an opponent. Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan administered the oath inside the Rajya Sabha Chamber.

Devi delivered her oath in Manipuri. She stood among six other new and returning members from states including Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. This appointment marks a major political win for the BJP in Manipur.

Several high-ranking officials watched the ceremony. Attendees included Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. The event also drew senior staff and members like Jairam Ramesh and Praful Patel. Following the event, the chamber officially recorded her status, confirming her role as the state's sole representative. As noted during the proceedings, she was "elected unopposed to the Upper House" which sets a milestone for her party in the region.
