Manipur BJP Leader Sharda Devi Sworn In as Rajya Sabha MP

Imphal: Manipur BJP President Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi took the oath of office as a Rajya Sabha member on Monday. She secured the state's only seat in the Upper House after running unopposed. Sharda Devi is the first woman from Manipur to ever hold this position.

Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan administered the oath in the Rajya Sabha Chamber. Sharda Devi delivered her oath in Manipuri. Six other members from states including Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan were sworn in alongside her. She marked the occasion online, stating, "A moment of pride, responsibility, and gratitude. Honoured to take the oath as Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. Dedicated to the service of Manipur and Bharat."

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took his oath separately in the chairman's chamber. He held a copy of the Constitution while swearing in. Radhakrishnan welcomed the experienced leader to the House.

Key officials observed the proceedings. Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Leader of the House J.P. Nadda, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju attended the ceremony. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal joined them to oversee the induction of the new representatives.
