Maimom Sharda Devi Takes Oath as Rajya Sabha Member

Imphal: Maimom Sharda Devi officially took her seat in the Rajya Sabha on Monday. Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office and secrecy at the Parliament House. Sharda Devi, the current president of the Bharatiya Janata Party for Manipur, delivered her oath in Manipuri.

She secured the position on June 11 after running unopposed. The nomination window closed with no other challengers in the race. She replaces former BJP leader Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba. She now stands as the sole representative for Manipur in the Upper House.

Seven new members took their oaths during the same ceremony. They represent states including Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. Officials noted that the oath taking process was standard procedure for the new cohort. "Sharda Devi, who is also the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Manipur Pradesh, took the oath in the Manipuri language."

Senior politicians including Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju watched the event. Sharda Devi plans to push for development, local peace, and welfare programs during her term. Her arrival marks a shift in Manipur's federal representation.
