Kohima: The 2026 Tsüngremmung Festival roared to life July 31 at the Longsa Village community hall. The four-day event celebrates deep Ao Naga roots. It runs through August 3.
The Longsa Village Council organized the festival under the Nagaland Department of Tourism. Rural Development Minister Metsübo Jamir served as the guest of honor. He pushed residents to protect their heritage from modern trends. Jamir stated, "Culture remains the same; it is the people who uphold and showcase it." He insisted that traditional attire, language, and customs stay original for those who follow.
Cultural pride took center stage. Five teams competed in two traditional events involving the village's four khels and the Mokokchung Unit. In the Wadang Ken ladies' contest, Lion’s Club grabbed the win. The Mokokchung Unit took second. The men’s Lidem Meyu event saw Eagle Club take the top spot, while Lion’s Club finished as runners-up.
Alemyongba performed on the Ku Kongki, a traditional cup violin. Officials handed out cash prizes to the victors. Jongpongtemshi Tatar delivered the vote of thanks. Winners from both categories will perform again during Saturday's main festival celebration.
