Kohima: Longtrok Senden Ungma took first place at the 41st Sobaliba Saya cultural competition held July 31 at Yimtsungda Arok Sabang in Ungma Village. Ten local clubs competed in the event, which was produced by the organizers in partnership with the North East Zone Cultural Centre, Dimapur. Oriental Club Ungma and Salukum Rogo finished as the first and second runners-up. Judges ranked each group on their attire, tribal calls, dance moves, drum beats, and vocal performances.
Special presentations filled the evening. The Longtrok Senden Mothers' Group performed cultural pieces while Fazl Ali College Students’ Union members showcased diverse Naga heritage. Dr. Watizulu Suzumeren Jamir, chairman of the Development Authority of Nagaland, attended as chief guest. He warned the crowd that young people who ignore their roots might lose their identity regardless of their material wealth. He pushed the youth to value their ancestral practices over modern digital distractions.
Oliver Temsu Pongen, deputy director of the NEZCC, served as guest of honor. He noted the event's longevity as a mark of community commitment. He praised the presence of child performers, arguing that early exposure keeps traditions relevant. Pongen remarked, "Encouraging children to learn and perform traditional dances would ensure that the culture remained alive for generations." He recognized the village council, teachers, and elders for their role in shielding Ao customs, folk songs, and wisdom from fading away.
