Landslide Shuts Down National Highway 29 in Phek

Kohima: A massive mudslide wiped out a wide stretch of paddy fields below National Highway 29 at Mesulumi Village on Wednesday. The destruction forced authorities to shut down the highway entirely. Road movement remains suspended between chainage 78+000 and 79+836 under Package IV of the Kohima-Jessami Road.

Phek Deputy Commissioner Rhosietho Nguori issued an urgent traffic advisory to keep the public safe. The road is closed indefinitely. He stated, "This advisory shall remain in force until further notice."

Drivers must take alternate routes. Heavy and light vehicles can travel the Pfutsero Town-Porba-Sakraba-Middle Khomi-Phek Village-Lanezho road. Light vehicles also have the option of the Pfutsero Town-Tsupfume-Thetsumi-Chizami route. Crews are on the clock. Nguori ordered the contractor, Keystone Infra Pvt. Ltd, to finish clearing the debris as fast as possible.

Other slides hit the Phek-Pfutsero road recently. Workers already cleared those routes for traffic. The main highway closure remains the primary concern for the district.
