Imphal: The Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) has called for a court-monitored investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the May 13 ambush that killed three prominent church leaders in Manipur. The group rejects claims made by the United Naga Council (UNC) regarding the incident, arguing that the deaths of Rev. Dr. Vumthang Sitlhou, Rev. Kaigoulun Lhouvum, and Pastor Paogoulun Sitlhou were the result of a calculated conspiracy rather than an isolated attack.
KOHUR contends that the victims were targeted because of their work promoting unity among the Kuki community and their efforts to establish the United Baptist Council as a new religious platform. The organization suggests the ambush was highly coordinated, noting that it occurred in close proximity to the abduction of several Kuki civilians in the Ireng area. They pointed to evidence suggesting that a specific vehicle was allowed to pass through the area unharmed shortly before the pastors were attacked.
The rights group dismissed denials from factions identifying as ZUF-K and highlighted inconsistencies in various public statements regarding the violence. KOHUR also drew parallels between this attack and previous incidents in K. Songlung and Kharam Vaiphei villages, arguing that these patterns indicate a systemic issue requiring independent oversight.
Beyond the murders, KOHUR raised urgent concerns regarding 14 Kuki men currently reported as captives in the Senapati district. The organization demanded their immediate release and reiterated its stance against hostage-taking. By calling for an NIA probe, the group seeks to address these ongoing human rights concerns and prevent further violence against civilians.
