Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union Laban Circle wants action against organizers who allegedly broke local laws during Muharram processions on June 25 and 26. Union members handed a memorandum to East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal on Tuesday.
General secretary Shiningstar Chyne claims the processions ran until 11 p.m. That is 90 minutes past the 9.30 p.m. permit cutoff. The route stretched from Red Cross to Rhino Point, choking narrow roads with heavy traffic. Ambulances got stuck in the gridlock.
Students preparing for mid-term exams reported constant noise from drums and chanting late into the night. Chyne said the union respects all faiths but insisted that, "religious activities should not come at the cost of public peace, tranquillity, safety, and security."
Participants performed fire acts and waved swords. Witnesses told the union that sparks from the fire displays struck passers-by. The KSU is now pushing the district administration to crack down on the organizers to prevent future disruptions.
