Konyak Union Denies Links Between Nagaland Sites and Assam Floods

Kohima: The Konyak Union officially refuted allegations that flooding in Assam stems from a non-existent dam or illegal gold mining in Naginimora. In a July 31 press clarification, the group dismissed claims involving the Dikhu Hydro Electric Project as entirely baseless. The project exists only as a proposal on Central Electricity Authority lists. It has never been built.

Reports and social media videos recently blamed the project and local mining for downstream floods. These claims allegedly originated from statements by Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi and Assamese Youth Forum official Akash Saikia. The Union stated that field assessments show no connection between Naginimora mining and the rising waters.

Instead, the Union pointed to extreme weather. Unprecedented rainfall on July 19 and 20 triggered flash floods and landslides across Mon district. The disaster killed 11 people and displaced over 650 families. Mudslides destroyed homes, schools, shops, and livestock while cutting off electricity and road access in Tizit and Naginimora.

The Union criticized the spread of unverified theories. They called for public figures to act with more responsibility. The statement warned that spreading misinformation could trigger legal consequences. Regarding the exploitation of the disaster for political gain, the Union noted, "Natural disasters should never be politicised or used to promote speculative narratives without scientific evidence or official verification."

The organization insists on technical, evidence-based investigations by experts. They remain focused on preserving peaceful ties between the people of Nagaland and Assam.
