Kohima: Students and staff at Government Higher Secondary School in Kigwema gathered September 9 for a sensitization event focused on School-Related Gender-Based Violence. The Lighthouse School Complex committee organized the talk to push for safer, inclusive classrooms. Teacher Counsellor Apukheno Yano chaired the session, which started with an invocation from Vice Principal Atone Chukhotolu.
Experts from the District Child Protection Unit, the Child Welfare Committee, the One Stop Centre, and Child Helpline 1098 led the training. District Child Protection Officer Sekho Dawhuo told the crowd that stopping violence takes everyone. He noted, "prevention of school-related violence requires active participation from students, teachers, school authorities and the wider community."
Kielie Nakhro of the Child Welfare Committee broke down the 2012 POCSO Act. He reminded adults that they must handle suspected abuse cases with extreme care and respect a child's right to privacy. Vimenu Richa from the One Stop Centre explained the POSH Act, urging staff to reject stereotypes and discrimination.
Students learned about personal boundaries and safe touch from Project Coordinator Rheituohunuo Whourie. She explained the 1098 reporting system and encouraged kids to speak up if they feel unsafe. Vikheka Assumi from Khuzama Police Station warned of growing cybercrime risks. He cited online job scams and the danger of losing mobile phones filled with sensitive data. Principal Rose Chishi ended the day by reminding the school that protecting kids remains a collective responsibility.
