Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union warned the Meghalaya government today it will take law enforcement into its own hands. Union president Raymond Kharjana delivered the ultimatum after meeting Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma in Shillong. Patience has run out. The group is tired of waiting for the state to act on immigration controls.
Kharjana demanded immediate movement on the Inner Line Permit, which remains stalled in New Delhi. The union also fought against plans to turn entry-exit points under the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act into food courts. “We want to send a clear message. If the government cannot implement these laws to safeguard the rights and identity of the indigenous community, the union will be compelled to implement these laws on its own to protect the interests of the indigenous community,” Kharjana stated.
The union also pushed for the Migrant Workers Act of 2020. They want mandatory police verification for all out-of-state workers. While the Chief Minister agreed to pursue that, he cited conflicts with federal law for other delays. Kharjana rejected these excuses. He insists the time for deadlines has passed. If the state refuses to secure the borders, the union claims it will use its own wisdom to do the job.
