Shillong: The Jaintia Students Movement issued a sharp rebuke today after police arrested four Jaintia National Council leaders. Officers picked up the group on July 30 at Sutnga Elaka. These leaders were traveling to Daistong village. They intended to support locals fighting a public hearing for Shree Cement. The session was slated for July 31.
The detainees include President Sambormi Lyngdoh, General Secretary Wanshwa Suting, Assistant Secretary Allmiki Ryngkhem, and Executive Member Hillarius Siangshai. The JSM claims the police action was illegal. They say the arrests trample democratic rights and serve as a blunt threat to anyone opposing the industrial project.
The group laid out a clear ultimatum. The JSM demands the East Jaintia Hills District administration release the men and drop all pending cases. "The JSM will be compelled to launch a strong agitation demanding their release," the group stated. The administration has 24 hours to comply before the protest begins.
