IMD Issues Heavy Rain and Flash Flood Alert for Shillong

Shillong: The India Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning for Shillong and surrounding districts, forecasting a shift from moderate rain to heavy to very heavy rainfall later this week. While current rainfall remains moderate, intensity is expected to climb significantly between June 18 and June 19.

Recent regional data reflects the ongoing weather shift. In the 24 hours ending Sunday morning, Mawsynram recorded 96.8 mm of rain, followed by 86.4 mm in Sohra and 20.5 mm in Shillong. On that same day, Shillong saw a minimum temperature of 15.9°C, which is 1.3°C below the seasonal average.

The department cautioned that East Khasi Hills, the Jaintia Hills, and South West Khasi Hills are set to face the most intense activity by June 16. Officials warn that the prolonged precipitation could trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in vulnerable areas. The report also predicts waterlogging, traffic disruption, and potential failures in municipal services like water and electricity.

To ensure public safety, the IMD has urged citizens to limit movement in high-risk zones and avoid riverbanks or areas prone to landslides. The agency explicitly stated, "The IMD has urged the public to restrict movement in affected areas and avoid traveling to landslide-prone zones." Furthermore, authorities are calling for the suspension of mining and quarrying operations during periods of intense rainfall to prevent accidents.
