Guwahati: Guwahati traffic police reported a sharp spike in rule violations throughout May, leading to a significant increase in penalty collections. Revenue generated through e-challans climbed to Rs 3.01 crore for the month, up from Rs 2.30 crore in April. Authorities have combined on-ground monitoring with the Integrated Traffic Management System to bolster road safety enforcement.
Drunken driving emerged as a primary concern, with cases jumping from 41 in April to 396 in May. Officials noted that this behavior remains a leading cause of severe accidents. Similarly, riders failing to wear helmets totaled 11,859 in May, with 8,230 of those detected via the city's automated traffic management technology. Wrong-side driving also saw a major increase, nearly doubling to 963 reported instances.
Other traffic infractions, including the use of prohibited black-tinted windows, triple riding on motorcycles, and seat belt negligence, also trended upward. Enforcement agencies responded by significantly increasing legal penalties for repeat offenders. The number of driving licences suspended or seized rose from just two in April to 223 in May, while court referrals surged from 123 to 1,107.
The department emphasized that it will persist with its current strategy to improve compliance. Police officials have urged motorists to follow regulations, noting, "Traffic officials said drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of serious road accidents and fatalities."
