Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi launched a sharp attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party on June 10, accusing the ruling party of systematically dismantling democratic institutions. During a press interaction marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 12 years in office, Gogoi claimed that the BJP maintains its political dominance by poaching members from other parties and orchestrating defections.

"The BJP has weakened democracy and reduced politics to a game of breaking and poaching parties. The same has happened in Assam," said the Congress leader. Beyond political maneuverings, he expressed deep concern over the state of press freedom, specifically questioning why Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma continues to hold the Information and Public Relations portfolio.

Gogoi further alleged that individuals linked to corruption and illicit activities, such as cattle syndicate operations and legislative assembly irregularities, have been granted ministerial roles in the state. He also criticized the party's handling of national and local issues, citing the NEET paper leak controversy and the lack of a clear timeline for granting Scheduled Tribe status to six Assam communities.

Regarding the electoral process, Gogoi took aim at the Election Commission for allegedly prioritizing BJP complaints while disregarding evidence-backed grievances from the Congress. In response to these political challenges, he announced that the Congress has initiated a series of grassroots review meetings across Assam to rebuild the party and better align with the needs of local ethnic groups.
