Guwahati: Authorities in Assam have arrested four employees at Sribhumi District Jail for allegedly facilitating a smuggling ring that provided prohibited items to inmates. The accused individuals include Assistant Jail Superintendents Rudra Deuri and Biswajit Barua, along with Head Warder Musahid Ali Laskar and Warder Subhashish Ghosh.
The arrests followed a February 2 raid on the facility led by Senior Superintendent of Police Leena Doley. During the operation, officers discovered 29 mobile phones, chargers, sharp objects, and various tobacco products including hookahs and cigarettes inside the cells. Additional Superintendent of Police Trinayan Bhuiyan confirmed the investigation revealed that staff members accepted payments to supply these goods. He stated, "The accused were allegedly involved in supplying mobile phones, tobacco products and sharp objects to inmates in exchange for money."
A formal case was opened after the raid, leading to the interrogation of inmates and the subsequent arrest of the four staff members and 25 prisoners. The jail employees appeared before the Sribhumi court and remain in custody. They are scheduled to appear in a Guwahati court on June 12 to face further legal proceedings.
