Imphal: Former Manipur police officer Thounaojam Brinda announced her decision to contest the 2027 Assembly elections from the Yaiskul constituency. She shared the news with local residents and supporters at her home on Sunday, marking an early start to her campaign for the upcoming state polls.
While Brinda confirmed her intention to run, she has not yet revealed which political party she plans to represent. Her formal affiliation remains undisclosed, though sources suggest an announcement regarding her party platform will follow soon. Addressing the crowd, Brinda emphasized her commitment to public service, stating she would work to address issues affecting the constituency.
This campaign marks her second attempt at winning the Yaiskul seat. She previously entered the race in 2022 but was defeated by Thokchom Satyabrata, the current Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Brinda is well-known for her previous career in law enforcement, particularly her work on anti-drug initiatives. In 2018, the state government honored her with the Police Medal for Gallantry for leading an operation that dismantled a major drug trafficking network and resulted in several high-profile arrests. She later returned the medal to protest the acquittal of the primary suspect in that case.
