Floods and landslides hammer Assam rail network

Guwahati: Northeast Frontier Railway crews are scrambling to clear flood and landslide damage after extreme weather crippled lines in Assam. Flooding in the Sivasagar district hit the Simaluguri station, its yard, and the nearby railway colony hard. Upstream rain pushed the Dikhow River over its banks. Workers are now hammering away at repairs in the Tinsukia Division.

Over 200 workers are assigned to the Selenghat to Amguri section to fix tracks and brace infrastructure. Repair teams also made progress on the Sivasagar Town to Simaluguri corridor this Tuesday. Senior officials are watching the work closely. The NFR stated, "Passenger safety remains its top priority and assured that every effort is being made to complete the restoration work efficiently while ensuring safe train operations."

Meanwhile, a landslide smashed into the Lumding to Badarpur hill section in the Dima Hasao district. The slide struck the night of July 23 at kilometre 118/1-3 near New Harangajao station. Roughly 200 metres of track on Lines 1 and 2 warped under the pressure. These tracks are now off-limits. Line 3 is open, but trains must crawl through the area at 10 kmph. This has stalled both passenger and freight movement across the region.
