Guwahati: Vantara is flying a 53-year-old elephant named Joymoti to its Jamnagar facility in Gujarat for emergency medical care. The elephant survived a harrowing flood in July that swept her through parts of Assam and Nagaland. Local communities and government agencies pulled her from the surging water. She endured the rescue in the second week of July.
Joymoti carries heavy wounds. She has deep cuts on her forehead, right ear, abdomen, and the area above her tail. A painful, maggot-infested wound sits near her genitals. Her right eye is ruined, leaving her blind on that side with constant tearing. An old fracture from her days in the logging industry forces her to limp, making it hard for her to find water or food. Local vets provided basic dressings and meds, but her age and multiple injuries require a higher level of care.
The air transport is a massive logistical operation. It marks a first-of-its-kind mission in India to save a pachyderm. Crews hope the flight avoids the physical strain of a long road trip. Vantara stated: "The decision to airlift her has been taken with her welfare and medical needs at the centre, allowing her to reach a specialised elephant hospital while minimising the duration and physical demands of ground transportation." She now heads toward a team of specialists equipped for her recovery.
