Shillong: A family of six narrowly avoided injury when a herd of wild elephants invaded their property and caused significant damage to their home in Meghalaya on Saturday night. The incident occurred in Joyfar village, located within the Betasing Community and Rural Development block near the India-Bangladesh border.
The house, owned by Ketaki Hajong, sustained heavy damage during the encounter. Officials reported that the animals destroyed the kitchen area and ransacked a room used for storing food grains and essential household items. Despite the destruction, all residents, including four young children, successfully fled the premises before the herd could reach them.
Local authorities are currently conducting an assessment to determine the full extent of the property damage. While the family has not yet requested immediate relief, officials confirmed that appropriate support measures will be considered once the evaluation is complete. The state continues to struggle with the recurring issue of human-elephant conflict, particularly in regions situated near forested areas and international borders. An official noted that such incidents of crop damage and property attacks are often reported, adding that "appropriate support and follow-up measures would be considered based on the findings of the assessment."
