Guwahati: A high-level European Union delegation traveled to Jagiroad in Assam on June 8 to inspect the Tata Electronics semiconductor project. Led by EU Ambassador to India Hervé Delphin and Belgium’s Ambassador to India Didier Vanderhasselt, the group assessed the progress of the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility, which serves as a cornerstone of India’s growing semiconductor manufacturing ambitions.
Morigaon District Commissioner Anamika Tewari hosted the team, providing insights into the region’s development and the infrastructure supporting the industrial hub. Throughout the tour, officials presented the project's construction timeline, advanced manufacturing techniques, and local workforce development efforts. Regarding the visit, officials noted the delegation “appreciated the pace of development at the facility and expressed interest in Assam's industrial growth as well as opportunities emerging from India's semiconductor manufacturing sector.”
This visit is expected to pave the way for increased international investment and collaborative partnerships between Assam and European entities. In addition to the site visit, the delegation is set to meet with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for bilateral talks. A group from the Federation of European Businesses in India will also arrive to discuss trade prospects within the state.
The diplomatic tour coincides with the June 9 launch of Assam's first Blue Valley Cluster. Operating on a public-private-people partnership model, this initiative focuses on food processing, fragrances, and AYUSH products. The cluster aims to bolster economic ties between Europe, Northeast India, and Bhutan by fostering research and sustainable business innovation.
